Mid-day Walks for Chase

Puppy Sitting with Leash.

Having a puppy is the most amazing experience!  When I met my last dog Jesse, she was about 4, and I used to try to imagine how cute she must have been as a puppy.  That is what made me want a puppy for our next dog. I wanted to know him or her from the start.  It is a decision I have not regretted.  Properly caring for a puppy is a challenging job, we quickly learned.  We decided to crate train him.  He was so small in a huge crate, that we filled the back half of the crate with cardboard boxes.  As he grew and started to chew on the boxes, we got rid of them.  We could not stand the thought of him being in his crate from 8 am until 4 pm, and everything we had read about crate training said he really couldn’t make it this long at his age.  Thankfully my job was only a 15 minute drive from our house, and I was able to come home for my lunch hour and spend 1/2 hour with Chase.  We would spend half that time out walking and playing, and the other half with him sitting beside be while I ate my lunch.  He was very well behaved and learned quickly that he could sit on the couch next to me while I ate, if he didn’t beg for food (which I never gave him).  I have incredibly fond memories of these lunches with Chase and I am grateful that I had the chance to do this with him.  It was a hardship, though.  I sacrificed my social time at lunch, and the commute was half of my lunch hour. I kept it up for about seven months, though, but it was hard.  I feel bad for people who want to experience a puppy, but whose schedules make it impossible.  One of the goals of Playful Paws is to make this dream a reality for people who work all day and can’t get home mid day.  One of our current clients has a beautiful and sweet Weimerander,  He is very well behaved and doesn’t complain or bark at people passing by his house.  But he is alone all day because of his owners schedules, and has been gaining weight.  He now gets walks and playtime four days a week, and is so happy to see Andy in the middle of the day.  We will see how his weight changes over time.

Someday, when we are older, and Chase is gone, I like to think that we could have another puppy and young dog in our house.  We really like the bigger breed dogs, but they are a lot of work.  Hopefully we will be able to hire someone to tire him out for us.  A well exercised dog is a happy dog, and a sweet , mushy dog that I can’t resist.  Mid-day walks are the key to a happy dog for the working family.  If your dog isn’t getting one, give us a call, we’d be glad to help.
